FATAL CRASH: Calgary man charged in accident that claimed life of Delta limo driver

A Calgary man has been charged after a fatal two-vehicle crash on the Sea to Sky Highway last January.

A North Vancouver RCMP spokesman said Jacob Mitzimberg, 20, is charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death after the Jan. 28, 2012, accident that killed limousine driver Shafiqur Rahman, 54, of Delta.

Rahman, who drove a limousine for the Aerocar company was remembered by his colleagues as a genuine family man who spent all the time he could with his wife and two sons, one of whom attends Simon Fraser University. His other son attends a Vancouver high school.

Rahman was the sole provider for his family and was known for his contagious smiles.

Rahman died after his limousine collided with a north-bound Dodge truck at Function Junction, just south of Whistler.

Upon impact his limo exploded. Rahman was trapped in the vehicle and died of his injuries.

In the days after his death, co-workers at Aerocar’s Richmond headquarters pleaded with the public for tips about the accident.

The staff were devastated over Rahman’s death.

“He brought light to everybody’s day,” Aerocar marketing manager Angela Mackinnon said in January. “He was always smiling. No matter what kind of mood you were in, one second of looking at him and you just had to smile.”

According to a press release issued Tuesday, Whistler RCMP and Sea to Sky Traffic Services investigators determined the southbound limo travelling on Hwy. 99 had been struck by a northbound pickup truck driven by Mitzimberg.

Police allege Mitzimberg was impaired by drugs. He was not seriously injured in the collision.

Mitzmberg has a first appearance of Dec. 5, 2012, in North Vancouver court.

Well, based on precedent, he’ll get 2 years in jail… Should be a minimum of 10, but what do we know, just the regular folks who want our in-justice system changed. A child abuser in the USA gets 99 years but here, if you kill someone, you basically get squat.
