KULJEET KAILA
VANCOUVER DESI
It’s been years since I moved to the Lower Mainland from the small B.C. town of Mackenzie and one of the first events I went to was the SFU culture show with my brother. We had no idea what we were into and it turned out to be one of the best events.
In one night, we went from only knowing about camping, working in mills, and the annual trip to Main Street to buy groceries to realizing students our age spoke fluent Punjabi and Hindi and not only that – aunties will look for potential matches while shopping at Superstore. Funny, hilarious and real-life scenarios taken to the main stage way before the Russell Peters of the world took us there.
So when I saw this online today at DesiEvents Vancouver, I must admit I got excited and wanted to go. Had to share this event:
Simon Fraser University and The University of British Columbia Sikh Students’ Associations will be hosting their sixth annual Sikh variety show, Nihaal ’13. The show will exhibit a different approach to learning; it will feature skits that raise awareness about social problems within the broader Indo-Canadian community, as well as inspirational speakers that will engage one and all to address issues and values within the community.
The net proceeds from this year’s show will benefit AIC – Ashraya Initiative for Children. The Ashraya Initiative for Children is dedicated to improving the lives and shaping the futures of vulnerable children in Pune, India by advancing the educational opportunities, nurturing holistic development and building healthy, empowered communities.
All tickets $10, available at Kamals Video Palace ( 604-592-9777) or UBC and SFU. For further information please call 778-240-2228 or 604-600-1493.
Doors open at 6 pm.
