TECH TALK: The technology of trimming down

The first month of a brand new year – local gyms are packed, people are buying fruits and veggies in bulk, crash dieting, cleansing, fasting and on any new trend they haven’t tried before.

For those who can afford it, cosmetic surgery has been a booming business for decades.  Liposuction, tummy tucks and reconstructive surgery.

Take all of those methods off the table and ask yourself, would you ever turn to technology to trim down the fat?

There are machines and gadgets on the market with high powered watts and ultrasound abilities used for more than medical purposes.

One of them is known as Liposonix.  A technological breakthrough, according to the makers.  It blasts a layer of fact and kills fat cells in targetted areas.  The body then magically removes this extra layer around the waist or thighs.  It claims to get rid of an inch in one hour.

So how much of this treatment can you get before it’s not safe or can a person get unlimited treatments?  Liposonix is a hot trend at local spa, Saunte Laser and Medical Spa in South Surrey.

Owner Cindy Charles says, “we have medical doctors and dieticians along with the technicians who do the treatment. Together they deteremine for each patient how much fat can be lost and how many treatments.  That is also how the price is also determined.  The size of the person and how many pulses of the ultrasound machine will be required.  The rule of thumb is you have to be able to pinch an inch say around the waist or thigh area for us to be able to treat that particular area.”

In such types of laser or ultrasound procedures, there has been a trend of the so called “basement laser rooms.”  People who buy the machines, get just a few hours of training and set up in their basements and start running a business.  This controversial trend has lead to skin burning, lawsuits and medical complications. What should someone do to make sure they are in qualified hands?

Charles says the best thing to do is research, research and research.  “Patients should always make sure the person doing the procedure is certified and with a medical background. Ask for degrees and/or diplomas.  It’s also pretty easy to know who is a doctor vs. a non professional.  This is why we have medical professionals.  This kind of treatment and technology costs a lot of money and we have the most qualified people running it.  Patients should also be careful of signing waivers where the person doing the treatment basically is liable for nothing. Compare those waivers.”

Here is more information and some  great Q and A’s on the procedure from a medical professional.  http://www.innovationsmedical.com/liposonix/
