Jangipur mega food park expects ITC to come

Kolkata, Nov 9 (IANS) Promoters of an upcoming mega food park in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district Friday said they were in talks with ITC for setting up the unit spread over a five-acre plot.

The mega food park at Jangipur, promoted by the state government and five other private firms, is expected to be operational by March next year.

“We are in talks with ITC. It had already made an inspection three months ago. So, we are expecting ITC to come here,” Jangipur Bengal Mega Food Park Ltd. managing director Amirul Islam told reporters here.

Islam said that in the first phase the park could accommodate 40 units on 100 acres.

On the possibility of ITC investing at Jangipur, Islam said, “We are in talks. And we are hoping that it would be positive.”

In the second phase, there would be about 250 acres of land in the park. But the acquisition process for that has not been started.

An ITC spokesman told IANS: “We are investing quite significantly in the food processing sector in West Bengal. Already a number of sites have been identified. However, we are not aware whether this (Jangipur) food park is part of the business plan.”
