Wipro to develop industry standard car solutions

Bangalore, Nov 21 (IANS) Wipro Ltd has joined the US−based Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) to develop smartphone−based industry standard solutions for passenger cars, the Indian IT bellwether said Wednesday.

The consortium is an international organisation dedicated to developing cross−industry solutions for smartphone and in−vehicle connectivity.

“Wipro has demonstrated vision and foresight by supporting MirrorLink, a industry standard that ensures seamless communication between smartphones and in−car systems like steering wheels, dashboard buttons and screens,” consortium chairman Mika Rytkonen said in a statement here.

Global automotive, mobile communications and consumer electronics industry firms are members of the consortium.

“As a world leader in product engineering solutions, we look forward to Wipro’s contributions to the connected car industry,” Rytkonen said in the statement.

Noting that the consortium membership would enable the global software major to create the best driving experience for car users worldwide, Wipro automotive electronics general manager John Slosar said the company had developed technology for building solutions to interface with terminal mode and non−terminal mode mobile devices.

“Consortium membership will enable us to provide MirrorLink certified solutions to our customers.

We envision a world where built−in and brought−in devices in a car work in harmony with each other,” Slosar said.

The global IT services firm has been working on standardising experiences across devices that will help achieve seamless infotainment.

“In the automotive space, we provide product development solutions for infotainment and telematics systems, body electronics, instrument clusters, power train and engine management systems,” Slosar said.

About 15,000 techies are engaged in the research and development (R&D) and product engineering services.

R&D services contributed to 12.4 percent of the company’s IT services revenue in fiscal 2011−12.

Among the members of the consortium are Alpine, BMW, Daimler, Delphi, Fiat, Ford, Fujitsu, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Motorola Mobility, Nokia, Panasonic, Pioneer Corporation, Renault, Samsung, Sony, Toyota and Volkswagen.
