TECH TALK: Can you take away a teen’s phone?

Teens and cell phones – we have a serious tech addiction problem here but the sad part is – parents don’t even notice anymore!

Scenario 1: At the best friend’s house for dinner and her teen daughter texts and is on her laptop (facebook) the entire time!

Do you:

a) say something

b) say nothing

c) leave dinner

Scenario 2:  You are at a hockey game and in front of you is a dad and his teen daughter.  Dad is totally into the game, daughter is totally texting a boy!  The ENTIRE GAME!  Fact is they are in your eyeline and every other minute, when someone pulls out a phone and texts like a mad person – it is annoying.

Do you:

a) Ask the teen to put it away

b) Mind your own business

c) Tell the parent

I wonder sometimes if parents have any idea what their teens are texting and facebooking.  Even sitting next to you at a hockey game.  Not quality time but good try.  The best advice I ever heard from a parent was a mom of twin teens who had to work all summer to pay for their own phones.  Even then, they had to leave the phones on their chargers OUTSIDE of their rooms.

Should parents read and monitor their teen’s messages more on social media and cell phones?  If you saw what this 12 year old was texting at the hockey game on a very cracked screened iPhone – you too would think twice.  Heck, my desi parents always want to know, “what the heck are you tick, tick, ticking away at all the time?”

It’s called respect -give people, especially parents, your undivided attention.

We let teens keep texting like this on their cell phones – imagine what’s going to happen on the roads when they are tech addicted drivers. Yikes.
