The video of Psy’s hit single “Gangnam Style” became the most watched item ever posted on YouTube with 806.28 million hits late Saturday, jumping ahead of Canadian teen star Justin Bieber’s “Baby”, which held the previous record with 803.65 million views after its release in 2010.
“Gangnam Style” was first posted to YouTube in July, and quickly became a massive hit at a global level.
The video mocks the consumerism of South Korean upper classes and features sunglass−wearing Psy dancing in a company of long−legged Korean models in a jerky style that resembles horseback riding.
It has already set YouTube’s record for the Most Liked video ever posted to the site, with its total standing at 5.3 million Likes.
“Gangnam Style” has generated numerous parodies, and many celebrities, including Madonna, imitated Psy’s dancing moves.
“Gangnam Style” won the Best Video Award at the 2012 MTV European Music Awards in Frankfurt Nov 11.
