Vancouver’s not-for-profit South Asian Family Association (SAFA) is bringing a new kind of festival to the downtown core that will offer the complete “Indian experience for a day.”

For the first time, SAFA is bringing an event called India Live to Granville Street on Aug. 9, which will offer two blocks – from W. Georgia Street to Smithe Street – of cultural activities in music, dance art and sport.

The day-long event is a new take on SAFA’s Sawan Mela, which was a song and dance-based performance the organization ran for ten years.

While the former event was passive – in that the audience would come only to watch performers – India Live will boast both “active and passive zones,” allowing attendees to interact and engage, said SAFA spokeswoman Nina Sohi-Brar.

“We’re departing from the old formula,” said Sohi-Brar, adding that the revamped event will offer a place for people to “come and learn” about various aspects of South Asian culture.

India Live will still see live performances from dance troupes like Yasmina Dance Academy, Neelamjit Quartet, Now or Never Dance Crew and artists like Vancouver-based Lapis and Toronto’s Manj Musik. But the event will also offer yoga, cricket, bhangra and dhol lessons, sari and turban tying, roti making and Bollywood makeovers.

“(It’s an opportunity) to learn about some of these other aspects of Indian subculture that maybe aren’t recognizable or at the forefront,” said Sohi-Brar. “It’s a chance to participate in the Indian experience for a day.”

The free event runs from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 9. For more information visit IndiaLive.ca
