Mumbai  — A team of doctors at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital performed a rare and unexpected surgery as they were forced to remove a 2.5 kg (5.5 pounds) tumour from a 26-year-old pregnant woman during an emergency caesarean operation, a medical team member said Monday.

Though the surgery was performed nearly two months ago, the doctors chose to announce their achievement now, once the patient had completely recovered.

The tumour — the size of a watermelon — remained undetected until the woman was brought to the hospital for a caesarean section.

“This is the first case in the country in which such a huge ovarian tumour has been removed during an emergency caesarian section operation,” Dr. Niranjan Chavan, with the hospital’s department of obstetrics & gynaecology, told IANS.

The woman – who works as domestic help in Vikhroli suburb – was in labour with a high pulse rate when she was brought to Sion Hospital June 15 from a private nursing home. She was immediately taken to surgery.

After a caesarian section operation, the doctors delivered a boy weighing 2.7 kg.

Post-delivery, as the team was preparing to close after the routine caesarean section, they were shocked to find a huge tumour in the woman’s abdomen.

“We had checked her medical records which only stated that she had already undergone two caesarian section procedures in the past, but nowhere was it mentioned that she had an ovarian tumour,” Chavan said.

Referring to it as an “an unfortunate development,” Chavan and his team finally removed the huge tumour, punctured it and drained a litre of fluids from it.

Fortunately, they also managed to save the woman’s left ovary.

According to department head, Dr. Y. S. Nandanwar, and Sion Hospital dean Avinash Supe, this was the first case reported in India where such a large ovarian tumour was excised during an emergency caesarean section operation.

The woman, who already has two sons, aged three and six-years-old, will be able to lead a healthy life following surgery as the tumour was benign, according to medical staff.
