A poor Indian couple is desperately seeking help to save their newborn son who was born with his heart outside of his body, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

The unnamed boy was delivered last week in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He suffers from an extremely rare condition called ectopia cordis, which leaves the heart protruding from the chest. He was given a less than one in a million chance of surviving three days, reported the British tabloid.

He is now into his seventh day.

The young boy is in desperate need of an expensive operation, but his parents, who survive on less than $5 a day, can’t afford private healthcare. And according to the Daily Mail, none of the state-run hospitals are able to perform the complex procedure.

“The doctors said we should go to a private hospital and get surgery done,” the father Nirbhay Pal said, adding he’s been told that without the procedure, his son will not live much longer. “But I am a poor man. We can barely afford two square meals a day. I don’t know what to do. We are hoping that the government will help us.”

“I have put everything at stake to save my child. We are feeling so helpless. We don’t know where to go.”

According to the Daily Mail, Pal and his wife Priyanka married four years ago and this is their first child.
