Representatives from the University of British Columbia and eight other Canadian universities are en route to India to promote education in Canada and  recruit international students to their undergraduate programs.

According to manager of international recruitment and marketing with UBC’s Vantage College, Marc Bavin, it’s an annual trip organized by the Canadian Higher Education Committee under the Council of International Schools – he’s also got about five more similar trips abroad scheduled this fall.

The recruitment process runs from Aug. 19 to 31, where representatives will meet with grade 11 and 12 students in Mumbai, New Delhi, Dehradun, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

“India is one of the larger prospective student markets, they’re very outward looking in terms of finding a degree opportunity in Canada,” Bavin told Vancouver Desi from the Calgary Airport, en route to India.

According to the Canadian High Commission, the number of Indian students studying in Canada in 2012 was 28,929 compared to 12,112 in 2011.

International students often look to Canada for an education for the low living expenses, lenient visa requirements and lower tuition fees – compared to other countries.

“Each year we are seeing more Indian students choosing Canada as their first choice for study,” said tour director, Robert Finlayson of Carleton University. “Indian students are drawn to our universities’ common attributes of international reputation for academic excellence, state of the art resources, and safe campuses in welcoming locations.”

“India is a key undergraduate student market for Canadian universities … Indian students are sought for their academic strength and their rich contribution to student life on Canadian university campuses.”

“Some of the key benefits are also for our Canadian students to have the experience of connecting with students from around the world without having to leave home,” added Bavin.  ”There’s the ability to understand cultural differences and also having those perspectives in the classroom makes the learning experience on campus a richer experience.”

Other  schools visiting India include  Carleton University, Concordia University, Guelph University, McGill University, Queen’s University, Ryerson University, University of Toronto and York University.
