New Delhi, Nov 11 (IANS) Delhi Police Sunday suspended an undisclosed number of officers for turning a blind eye to encroachment by shopkeepers during Diwali leading to traffic snarls.
“The action is being taken against officers under a drive launched Thursday,” police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told IANS. He did not reveal the number of officials suspended.
Shopkeepers have extended their space all across the capital ahead of Diwali, often claiming space even on pavements. This has led to huge traffic snarls and choas on the roads.
A police officer said that the vigilance department and Special Cell were tasked with checking encroachment by clicking pictures.
“Photographs from the markets of Greater Kailash, Rajouri Garden and Krishna Nagar were given to us,” said the officer.
The Delhi Police drive will continue till Diwali.
