Family mourns woman who died in Allahabad stampede

New Delhi, Feb 11 (IANS) The family and neighbours of a 40-year-old woman who died in the stampede at the Allahabad railway station mourned her at her residence in the capital Monday.

Babita Gupta was in a group of 20 pilgrims returning to Delhi after taking a dip in the Sangam, confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati, at Allahabad on the occasion of ‘Mauni Amawasya.’

She is survived by her husband, Subhash Chand Gupta, and three children. The family resides at Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi.

The body was brought to the family home Monday evening.

“The children cannot believe that their mother is dead. Neighbours and relatives are trying to console them,” a relative said, adding that Babita Gupta had been excited about the pilgrimage.

At least 36 people were killed and over a dozen injured in a stampede following the collapse of an overbridge railing at the Allahabad railway station Sunday, which saw a huge rush of travellers for Mauni Amavasya, an especially auspicious bathing day in the 55-day Maha Kumbh.
