Shiite Muslims around the world mark the beginning of their Islamic calendar year with Muharram, a month of mourning for the death of Imam Hussain, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.

Worshippers participate in a ritual of self-flagellation and cut themselves with swords and knives during Ashura, to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in a battle against Yazid near Karbala in 680 AD.

Ashura is observed on the 10th day of Muharram, and has become a national holiday in countries like India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan.
