London – An Indian man in Britain strangled his wife and burnt her body just months after marrying her in a bid to hide his homosexuality, a U.K. court has heard.

Jasvir Ram Ginday, 29, is alleged to have attacked his wife, Varkha Rani, with a metal pipe from a vacuum cleaner at the home they shared with his parents in the British Midlands in September 2013, according to the BBC.

Ginday then burnt her body in a garden incinerator, the Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Police found the remains of the victim’s body in the garden after neighbours reported seeing smoke from it. The smoke was so thick that one neighbour feared the home was on fire, but Ginday allegedly told the neighbour he was just burning some “rubbish.”

Ginday, a bank employee, admit to manslaughter but denied the murder charges.

Rani, 24, married Ginday in India in March last year and moved to Britain to live with him in August once she was granted a visa.

Ginday initially reported his wife as missing and told police she walked out on him after using him to gain entry into the country.

“His ultimate intention, the crown suggests, was to play the role of victim, safe in the knowledge that he could rely upon his married status as a permanent excuse for never having to have another relationship with a woman,” prosecutor Deborah Gould was quoted as saying.

The trial continues.
