New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS) President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday met 22 children selected for the National Bravery Awards 2012 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, officials said.
The children, four of whom are girls, have been invited to New Delhi and will be awarded by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the eve of Republic Day Jan 26. The children will then participate in the Republic Day parade.
The children also met Vice President Hamid Ansari and shared their experiences.
The scheme of National Awards for Bravery was started in 1957 by Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) for children who have performed outstanding deeds of bravery and meritorious service. The awardees will receive a medal, certificate and cash.
The ICCW has given awards to 846 brave children, out of which 602 were boys and 244 girls.
