A pair of Indian conjoined twins born with two heads and one body died of heart failure at 20-days-old, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

The baby girls were delivered by C-section on March 13. They had two heads, two necks, two spines, but shared one heart, stomach and body and had one lung each.

Originally born in a nursing home in northern India, the babies were quickly moved to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, where they were watched by a neonatal intensive care unit.

According to the Daily Mail, the twins suffered from respiratory problems and, in the end, their single heart was too weak.

The girls’ 28-year-old mother, Urmila Sharma – who already has a three-year-old daughter – never met her twins, the Daily Mail reported.

Sharma’s husband, Subhash, told the British publication the couple struggled to come to terms with their daughters’ extremely rare condition.

“It was very painful for both my wife and I to see them battling with life,” he said. “Even though doctors had told us that they had minimal chances of survival, we hoped they’d live.”

“The fact they survived for 20 days was even a miracle.”

“(My wife) had accepted their fate but being a mother, it’s still hard to accept their death.”

Subhash told the British publication that if his wife becomes pregnant again, he will seek better medical care to ensure they’re better prepared.
