Tuesday marked five years since Surrey husband and father Yashpal Mehay disappeared during a routine trip to Clinton, B.C.

The 45-year-old family man was reported missing July 15, 2009, the day after he left his Surrey home to head to a Petro Canada gas station he operated with his brother-in-law in the South Cariboo of B.C.

His missing person file still remains open with Surrey RCMP, so to mark the fifth anniversary of his disappearance police are renewing the plea for information regarding the case.

“Nothing makes us believe that he wanted to leave or start a new life,” said Cpl. Bert Paquet with Surrey RCMP. “He was not depressed, he was happily married, a religious man, a good father — it’s just out of the ordinary.”

His trip to Clinton was one he made every other week and according to police, Mehay had no health or addiction issues, no marital problems or criminal affiliations and there was no evidence to suggest he met with foul play.

“That’s why, just based on those circumstances, the focus of our efforts has been on the roads,” said Paquet.

In the days, weeks and months following Mehay’s disappearance, RCMP launched an “extensive search” by land and air, covering the route he’s believed to have travelled from Chilliwack to Clinton via Highway 1 to Cache Creek, north on Highway 97 to Clinton. Alternate routes of Highway 12 between Lytton and Lillooet and Highway 99 between Lillooet and the junction with Highway 97 were also searched, to no avail.

“We’ve exhausted the majority of all possibilities,” said Paquet.

RCMP are asking the public to come forward if they remember seeing anything at all — even if it “might seem insignificant,” like tire tracks veering off the road, said Paquet.

“(It might) be the one tip that we’re looking for to help us break this case,” he said. “We are hoping that someone might have seen or heard something … and might provide us with a tip that might assist us not only in solving this case but also bringing closure to the family.”

According to Paquet, Mehay’s family — his wife Meetu and two sons Barjesh and Bobby — have been “living with a lot of unanswered questions.”

“We’re just hoping for that one tip that will help us answer a lot of questions for the family,” he said. “Some kind of an explanation to what took place.”

Mehay’s brother-in-law, Bhagwant Sandi, who acted as family spokesperson in the past, declined comment Tuesday as he “didn’t want to put his sister and family through that again.”

Mehay was last seen at a Staples Office Supply in Chilliwack around 3 p.m. July 14 and according to video surveillance he was alone and did not appear to be in distress. He’s described as a 45-year-old South Asian man, about 5’7 and weighing 185 lbs. He has short black hair, brown eyes and a black moustache. He was last seen wearing a striped green and white long-sleeved American Eagle shirt with khaki pants and was driving his grey 2004 Mazda MPV with licence plate 494 KVK.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, referencing file number 2009-86044, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
