A group of Indian lumberjacks were shocked to find a baby girl in a remote jungle area after she had apparently been abandoned in a region inhabited by leopards, wild cats, hyena and foxes.

The lumberjacks said the fact the blanket the girl was wrapped in was soaking wet made them think she had been there at least two days, as it had last rained two days earlier over the forest near Budhi Tillod village near the city of Indore in central India’s Madhya Pradesh state.

Medics at the hospital in Indore where the baby girl, who is around eight-months-old, was taken by ambulance confirmed that she was suffering from dehydration and had not eaten or drank any think “for a least 24 hours”.

Paediatrician Dr Sharad Thora said: “It is clear that the child had also not been properly nourished before she was abandoned.”

Indore police spokesman Rajesh Kumar Singh said: “We have registered a case for exposure and abandonment of child by the parent or person having care of the child. We believe the child was abandoned their to die.”
