A driver accused of striking an 11-year-old boy as he exited his school bus in Surrey has turned himself in.
“We are pleased to report that the driver did the right thing by coming forward and turning himself in, and we are extremely happy that the child involved in this accident is expected to make a speedy recovery,” Cpl. Bert Paquet said in a news release.
The 19-year-old driver’s vehicle has been seized for forensic inspection.
The boy suffered no significant injuries and is expected to be released from hospital Friday, according to police.
Police said the accident happened on 82nd Avenue near 154B Street at around 3:30 p.m.
A school bus had stopped and turned on its stop sign and flashing lights to allow the children to cross a two-lane road.
The boy had just started to cross from in front of the bus when an older-model dark-coloured Honda drove up from behind and smacked into the boy, Hedderson said.
“The boy was hit and [sent flying] in the air,” Hedderson said. “It seems like [the driver] was going pretty quickly.”
The Honda did not stop, police say, and continued westbound.
