Sister acts as proxy bride after woman gets stranded while visiting family grave

A bride’s sister covered for her on her wedding day after she was stranded thousands of miles away after visiting her family grave – to ask her ancestors blessing for the marriage.

Rather than cancel the ceremony and reception the bride and groom decided in a long distance phone call to go ahead with the extraordinary stand-in.

Bride-to-be Xiong Yanbo, 25, was thousands of miles away from the ceremony in the city of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, when she was held up because of the grave side visit.

“I just couldn’t make it, flights were cancelled and everything else was full,” she said.  But rather than disappoint everyone who turned up she and groom Liu Wei, 30, asked her sister to stand in for her.

She walked up the aisle and toasted the groom at the wedding reception afterwards, and even gave him a hug for the photographs.

Liu said: “It was the best solution to avoid disappointment for the guests and to avoid losing lots of money.

“Of course, I will marry my real wife quietly in the near future, but this was the best solution on the day. Her sister didn’t mind and everyone had a good time.”

He even got to kiss the ersatz bride in front of 300 guests at a reception in a local restaurant.

Xiong was held up in her hometown in Sichuan Province because tradition demanded that she take part in an annual spring cleaning of the family plot in the local graveyard. She had also travelled there seeking a blessing from her ancestors in the form of an omen for her future happiness.
