Bollywood’s favourite choreographer, Shiamak Davar, has been awarded  the Governor General’s Medallion for his ongoing role in building relationships between India and Canada.

Davar opened his first international dance school in Canada before expanding throughout North America, Australia and Europe.

For more than a decade he’s been making dance accessible for hundreds of Canadian Bollywood fans – even giving some of his dancers the chance to perform alongside some of the industry’s top celebrities during the Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) held in Vancouver last spring.

“I am so honoured and grateful to have received the Governor General’s Medallion and Citation,” Davar said in a release. “I consider Canada my second home, which makes this especially meaningful for me. Dance has always been a powerful agency in my life, and I am so pleased to be able to use my passion for the performing arts to create a common ground for our nations.”

Not only did Davar co-direct and choreograph TOIFA in Vancouver, he also helped shoot Bollywood film Taal in Ontario and choreographed the IIFA Awards held in 2011 in Toronto.

“Shiamak is a businessperson, he has opened dance schools in Canada but his contribution is much more than that,” Consul General Richard Bale said in a release. “It is an extremely impressive cultural contribution he has made.”

“He’s a great friend of Canada who has brought Canadians and Indians closer together through the power of music and dance.”
