British Airways has sent out an apology for a poorly timed ad encouraging travellers to fly to the Indian Ocean just days after it was revealed it’s likely the location where the missing Malaysian flight MH370 went down.

A photo of the advertisement, which reads “escape the commute and discover the Indian Ocean” written across a watery background, was initially posted on Reddit and since spread to Twitter and other social media platforms.

According to the original Reddit post, the ad was a video running at a U.K. railway station in Central London.

A number of Twitter users then picked up the photo and posted it along with the words “Not the best time for British Airways to run this ad.”

British Airways responded to the social media frenzy by posting an apology to its Twitter page.

“Our Indian Ocean advert contained pre-scheduled content that we recognize is inappropriate at this time. We’re sorry for any offence caused,” the airline tweeted on Thursday.

The search area for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 has changed several times since the plane vanished as experts analyzed a frustratingly small amount of data from the aircraft, including the radar signals and “pings” that a satellite picked up for several hours after radar contact was lost.

The latest analysis indicated the aircraft was travelling faster than previously estimated, resulting in increased fuel use and reducing the possible distance the aircraft could have flown before going down in the Indian Ocean.

Malaysia’s civil aviation chief, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, told reporters in Kuala Lumpur that analysts at Boeing Co. in Seattle had helped with the analysis of the flight.

Planes and ships had spent a week searching about 2,500 kilometres southwest of Perth, Australia, the base for the search. Now they are searching about 1,850 kilometres west of the city.
