BAGHDAD — Iraqi state television says the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff has arrived in Baghdad for talks with Iraqi officials.
Gen. Martin Dempsey’s arrival Tuesday makes him the highest-ranking U.S. military official to visit Iraq since the last American troops withdrew from the country in December.
Iraqi state TV didn’t provide any further details about his visit. Dempsey is expected to discuss military co-operation between the two countries.
The U.S. general travelled to Iraq after a visit to Afghanistan, where an insurgent rocket attack damaged his plane while it was parked at an American base north of Kabul. The general and his aides were safe in their quarters, and flew to Baghdad on a different aircraft.
