Delhi Police to book mafia don Brijesh Singh under MCOCA

New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) Delhi Police is likely to book Brijesh Singh, a mafia don from Uttar Pradesh and his 13 associates under the stringent MCOCA in a case of extortion, an official said.

Brijesh Singh was arrested by Delhi Police’s special cell from Odisha in 2008 and handed over to Uttar Pradesh Police.

“Singh is presently lodged in Varanasi jail. Other gang members which include his nephew Sushil Singh, who is a sitting legislator in Uttar Pradesh,” a senior police officer told IANS.

Police said that Singh, along with the others, is accused of demanding Rs.1 crore with a Delhi based businessman in 2006.

A Delhi court had ordered police to book them under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MACOCA), the officer said.

Singh had created a reign of terror in eastern UP and Bihar for over two decades but always managed to elude police.

MCOCA has the highest punishment of life imprisonment or death and has no provision of anticipatory bail.
