An elephant that demolished a remote Indian village home returned to the wreckage to save a baby upon hearing its cries from under the rubble, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

The rampaging elephant, already known to residents of the West Bengal village for having wrecked houses and killed people in the past, stormed through a home at night while a family was inside.

According to the family, as the animal left the wreckage it heard the baby girl crying and returned. It used its trunk to lift the 10-month-old out of the debris and then sauntered back into the forest, the Daily Mail reported.

“We watched amazed as it gently removed the debris that had fallen on her. It’s a miracle,” said the girl’s mother, Lalita Mahato. “I can’t believe the tusker saved my daughter after breaking down the door and smashing a wall.”

Her daughter suffered some minor external injuries but is in stable condition.

According to region forest officials the elephant has killed at least three people in the past year, and has damaged at least 17 houses and destroyed crops, the Daily Mail reported.

“What’s really surprising is that this elephant left the little girl alive even after damaging the house. It seems to have a heart, too,” said forest ranger Samir Bose.

Man-animal confrontation is a regular occurrence in West Bengal’s Purulia district where the incident happened, especially since changes in land use patterns have blocked traditional animal migration routes.
