A film based on the true story of a young Sikh man tortured by the Indian police is coming to the main stage at the Surrey Arts Centre.

The Canadian Sikh Coalition is presenting the six screenings of Bhaar: Unthinkable Burden, all on Saturday and Sunday.

The filmmakers bill the story as follows:

“A real life story through the eyes of a young Sikh male depicting the dark chapter of state-sanctioned violence in Punjab. This story takes you through the life experiences of Punjabis who were subjected to torture at the hands of the Indian police.”

The CSC describes this as a little-documented era of Punjab’s history — partly because little of it was document, but also because some of the documentation was purposely destroyed. In a news release, they described the story of Bhaar as “a drop in the ocean when it comes to representing the events within Punjab in the past three decades.”

Tickets are available for $10 each by calling 604-501-5566.
