Sikh temple in Vancouver, Wash. destroyed by blaze
The Guru Ram Das Sikh temple in Washington State’s Vancouver was destroyed by fire early Thursday morning.
The temple on NE 20th st was noticed ablaze by neighbours at 2:25am. Firefighters were reportedly there minutes later.
Two construction workers who had been staying at the building reportedly escaped without injury.
The Sikh group that owned the complex had been trying to raise money to remodel the building from its previous use as an athletic club.
The 200-family community was looking to move into the building in December.
Community members interviewed told of the news as being devastating, and that it had ended four years of work to get the temple ready.
FBI and ATF agents are on the scene to investigate whether the fire was deliberately lit.
The plan to turn the facility into a temple had been initially opposed by residents of the area, who considered it to be a likely traffic and safety issue.
