NEW DELHI — A fire has swept through a slum in India’s financial capital Mumbai, killing six people and injuring at least seven others.
Most of the victims were asleep in their tin-roofed shanty homes in the sprawling slum in southern Mumbai when the fire broke out just before dawn Friday.
It took 15 fire trucks and water tankers more than four hours to put out the flames. Firefighters had a hard time entering the narrow lanes of the slum in Mumbai’s Mahim suburb. At least 50 slum dwellings were reduced to smouldering heaps, leaving about 200 people homeless.
It was not immediately known what caused the fire.
Fires often break out in Mumbai’s slums, usually sparked by electrical short circuits from the many thousands of illegal power connections.
