Many gathered in Surrey for a vigil at Holland Park Friday night to honour the 100th anniversary of the S.S. Komagata Maru’s arrival in Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet.

Nearly 400 passengers, most Punjabi Sikhs, made the long journey to Canada in hopes of a more prosperous life, but upon their arrival May 23, 1914 the ship’s 376 passengers were barred from entering Canada under exclusionary laws.

They were docked for two months until the ship was escorted out of Canadian waters and sent back to India, where a riot ensued. At least 20 men were killed by British forces and many others jailed.

A number of memorials took place Friday and other exhibits honouring the centennial run through the summer.
