VANCOUVER DESI

Thousands of people head out into the Saturday sunshine to celebrate Vancouver’s 25th annual Vaisakhi parade.

The event, organized by the Ross St. temple’s Khalsa Diwan Society, celebrates the Punjab harvest time and the birthday of Sikhism – which dates back to 1699.

This year saw about 15 floats travel the nearly 10 kilometre parade route through South Vancouver, including a special float dedicated to the centennial year of the Komagata Maru incident, in which 376 Punjabi immigrants were denied entry to Canada in 1914.

The Vancouver event is North America’s oldest Vaisakhi day parade.
