VANCOUVER DESI

A Hindu chariot will be pulled through Burnaby streets in celebration of the local Hindu society’s tenth annual Ther festival, Aadi Pooram, this August.

On August 9, the chariot will be pulled from the Arul Migu Thurkadevi Hindu Society’s Edmonds St. location, to Mary Ave,  head southwest on 19th Ave., over to Humphrey’s Ct. and back to Edmonds St.

According to Kandiah Kumarasamy, society president, the festival marks the end of two weeks of special poojas, prayers and meditation.

The streets will be closed down for the festival and a few hundred people are expected to participate in the parade.

President of the Universal Society of Hinduism and Nevada, U.S. Statesman, Raja Zed, applauded the temple’s annual festival.

“(It’s) important to pass on Hindu spirituality, concepts and traditions to coming generations amidst so many distractions in the consumerist society,” Zed said in a release. “We should focus on inner search and realization of self and work towards achieving moksh (liberation), which was the goal of Hinduism.”
