A man who became infatuated with a woman in his university class last year then repeatedly stalked her has been jailed.

Provincial court Judge Anne Brown sentenced Satveer Johal for criminal harassment and three breaches of no-contact orders to another 90 days on top of more than three months already spent in custody and placed him under a lengthy probation order during which he must get psychiatric and psychological counselling.

“You’ll be under some form of strict supervision for 2 1/2 years,” Brown told Johal, 21, during sentencing on Friday. “You must have no contact whatsoever with the complainant and her mother.”

Johal stalked the woman on various social media and showed up at her house several times over an eight-month period, despite the fact she made it clear she had no interest in him.

Crown prosecutor Janice Walsh said Johal’s behaviour was consistent with an unrepentant stalker and his actions left the victim and her mother at times scared to leave their home.

“Mr. Johal says he could see it in her eyes that she loved him but he has difficulty accepting she wanted nothing to do with him,” Walsh said. “(It must be brought) home to him that his affections were unwanted. We have a warning, charges laid and three arrests for breaches.

“In their victim impact statements, it is quite clear that both the complainant and her mother were extremely adversely affected by Mr. Johal’s behaviour. The cumulative effect is long term on them.”

Walsh earlier said in reading the agreed facts that Johal met the victim in a geology class at Mount Royal University in January 2013, but they had very little conversation between Jan. 25 and July 21. It was then that he began harassing her by repeatedly contacting her through Facebook, phone calls and texting.

She didn’t know who he was, said Walsh, and didn’t want to have anything to do with him so she blocked him from her Facebook page. However, she then began to receive numerous text messages and phone calls each day from him, prompting her to call police.

On July 23, 2013, Johal attended her house when she was alone at home. Afraid of what he would do as his behaviour was making her very uncomfortable, she didn’t answer the doorbell but instead called police, leading to the first breach of the no-contact clause. He was again picked up for showing up at her door on Sept. 16 and Oct. 2.

Walsh said after police arrested him in September, they asked Johal why he was doing this to the victim and he replied, “I don’t get turned down by girls.”

Johal told the judge before sentencing that he never intended to communicate with the woman again after his arrest for criminal harassment in June 2013, and was on the right track in getting his life back on course, but just went to see her to say he was sorry.

Lawyer Rebecca Snukal, who argued that her client should be sentenced to time already served, said he was at the time of the harassment hanging around with bad influences and has since stopped seeing them.

“At the time of the offences, he was untreated and now he’ll get the treatment he needs,” said Snukal. “He was going to her home to apologize and there were no threats, no violence. But I’m not saying his behaviour isn’t concerning or scary.”

The judge, however, noted that on that occasion Johal had gone to the victim’s home at 6 a.m. after partying and consuming drugs the previous night.
