One of New Delhi’s most anticipated pop-culture events is taking place this weekend: Indian Comic Con.

The capital’s Thyagaraj Stadium will be transformed into a comic book universe filled with superheroes like Ironman to villains like gory zombies for the city’s fourth annual event.

New Delhi’s comic book aficionados will be headed to the local stadium to grab their favourite merchandise from Captain America posters to Suppandi, Batman and Chacha Chaudhary among others.

The mega event is expected to draw comic book enthusiasts dressed up as their favourite characters, as well as international comic creators, popular brands and standalone artists who will be showcasing their talents to interested readers.

“The convention promises as much to old world fans as it does to the new and curious ones,” says Jatin Varma, the moving spirit behind Comic Con Delhi.

Apart from browsing the numerous stalls of quirky merchandise, fans can look forward to attending workshops conducted by some big names in comics, picking up rare titles or discussing Star Wars over superhero cupcakes.

The legends expected to appear include editor of DC Comics Mark Waid, creator of the 1980s V for Vendetta, David Lloyd, creator of the Eisner winning series Chew, John Layman, creator of Indian sci-fi comic series Daboo, Pran and twin siblins Fabio and Gabriel who created Casanova and the ongoing spy series Daytripper.

The continuing success of the event is not surprising considering that since the 1960s India has had a robust comic book tradition in the form of Amar Chitra Katha comics that are rooted in the country’s rich myth and folklore.

Today, independent artists like Abhijeet Kini, Akshay Dhar and Sharad Sharma, who also double up as publishers, infuse their work with local flavour and endeavour, quite successfully sometimes, to go beyond superheroes and simplistic comics.

Indian Comic Con kicked off Friday and runs until Sunday.
