A man took a photo without Balpreet Kaur’s consent and uploaded onto Reddit in the “funny” category with the tagline “im (sic) not sure what to conclude from this”.
The picture shows her standing in a queue. The student, who is president of the Sikh Student Association, refused to attack the person who had posted the photo.
The aspiring neurosurgeon, instead of flying into a rage at the person behind the cheap dig, posted a comment explaining why she didn’t remove her hair, the newspaper said.
Kaur, who is an Ohio State University student, pointed out that as part of the five Ks that Sikhs follow, one of the tenets is Kesh, which asks that she allows her hair to grow naturally and does not cut it.
Kaur said: “I’m not embarrassed or even humiliated by the attention (negative and positive) that this picture is getting because it’s who I am.”
Many viewers accused the person behind the cheap dig of being mean and deliberately trying to draw laughs at Kaur’s expense.
“Yes, I’m a baptized Sikh woman with facial hair. Yes, I realize that my gender is often confused and I look different than most women,” Kaur said.
“However, baptized Sikhs believe in the sacredness of this body – it is a gift that has been given to us by the Divine Being [which is genderless, actually] and, must keep it intact as a submission to the divine will.”
Kaur took to Reddit to say that she was trying to ignore society’s view of beauty, and hoped she could concentrate on more important things.

Wow, she showed a really good attitude by not getting nasty about it. However, I think it is really unusual to have hair of that density and thickness on a girl…my brother never shaved until he was in college, and he had finer hair than this. I think it would be a good idea to get tested for an endocrine disorder…maybe PCOS?? it is very common among desi girls.
woww thats very brave i am proud and i will look up to her though i am not baptised i still beleive that all beauty is from within
Wow! What a wonderful person. Beauty comes from within & you are truly beautiful.hope you fulfill your dreams to make a difference.dignity & patience are lovely virtues to possess .
No one should fault her strengths and beliefs, her apearance is her choice, and vain wanna be’s (Its a word) should butt out and let her pursue her career in peace…..
Wow….good for her to ignore people that have nothing better to do than to laugh at someone’s expense. I wonder who people laugh at now….her or the person who actually tried to make fun of her. I wish I had half of her patience for people who do not respect other cultures, values and religion. Why can’t we all live in peace and harmony.
I wish there were more women like u in our society I am speechless and wowed by u for being an inspiring women to other Sikh women who go threw sort of discrimination good 4 u! Stay tall!
She sure as hell fit my definition of beauty.
Believing you must “keep yourself intact” because that’s the way you were born, is really stupid. So you shouldn’t fix a congenital heart condition? You shouldn’t fix a blockage to make your breathing easier? It’s got nothing to do with staying as you were born, but everything to do with following outdated practices that make no sense. If you want to go around looking like a werewolf, more power to you, but to expect people not to laugh cuz you want to look like a joke is expecting too much.
Are you ignorant or just an idiot? She is letting her hair grow for the sacredness of her body (tattoo’s, waxing, peircings, etc). If there was something wrong with her HEALTH, it would be treated and dealt with the way SHE would want it to be.
It’s strange to us, but why should she care. Fact of the matter is, she will have more impact and a contribution to society than 99% of people on earth will ever have. And at the end of the day, THAT’S what matters.
Way to go, what a great attitude you have and I admire your self esteem and thick skin!la great example to impressionable youth
Name spell wrong,read as Balpreet
We are proud of you Baljit,Yes still people are there who face situation with explanation.
Hat’s off to you Balpreet. You make us proud as Sikhs. Excellent discipline for not letting petty comments like this or any other bother you. You are right, there are more important things in life to achieve and deal with.
