Preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival marking the birth of the elephant-headed god, have taken off in India as Hindus prepare to welcome the deity into their homes and communities.

Lord Ganesha is worshipped for his ability to remove obstacles and bring good fortune.

His birthday will be observed on August 29, which falls on the fourth day of the new moon in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada this year,  and the festivities will go on for 11 days.

On the last day, the statues are immersed in the ocean or other water bodies after parading through streets, accompanied with lots of music and dancing.
