Loyal dog refuses to leave boy’s grave. CEN

A loyal dog who refused to leave his master’s grave even to eat has inspired animal workers in southern India.

Brave pup Tommy spent two weeks guarding 18-year-old accident victim Bhaskar Kumar’s  graveside refusing to be moved and pawing at the ground in Chennai, a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

“Everyone who saw him was inspired by his love for his master. He wouldn’t even leave to eat. He just scratched at he ground and whined, it really was a sad sight,” said Blue Cross volunteer Dawn Williams.

“He was skin and bones and very weak but still he refused to leave. People were trying to tempt him with food and water, but he just wasn’t interested. He never took his eyes off the grave,” she added

Tommy was only rescued when Bhaskar’s mother Sundhari Kumar, 50, visited the grave and encouraged the dog to leave.

Another Blue Cross volunteer, Mukund Jahir, said: “She clasped the dog, held its neck to her face and cried.”

Mum Sundhari said later: “Both Tommy and I have lost someone we love and maybe we can now find some peace together.”

Cases of loyal pets who refuse to leave their dead owners have inspired animal lovers in the past.

Most famous of all was the case of Greyfriars Bobby, the terrier that in the 19th century spent 14 years guarding the grave of his master until he, too, died.
