B.C. MP Jinny Sims was born near Nurmahal, Punjab, India. Ward Perrin/PNG files
MP Jinny Sims is in Punjab, India where she is reassuring residents that she is working to solve common immigration issues, says an article in the Hindustan Times.
Sims, who represents B.C.’s Newton-North Delta riding, was born in a village near Nurmahal, Punjab.
“I am fighting against the ban put on family reunification by the Canadian government,” Sims told reporters Tuesday. “There are many Indians who have spent years in Canada. Now if they want to call on their parents and grandparents, the government should not stop them. Many people of my constituency have met me in this regard.”
In 2012, Sims was appointed the NDP Critic for Immigration, Citizenship and Multiculturalism. Slated to visit the Golden Temple, Sims added she would also visit the consulates in Chandigarh and New Delhi to know first-hand what immigration-related problems Indian residents faced. One piece of advice she offered was a warning to young people from India that they must adopt legitimate ways to go abroad and not fall in the trap of dubious travel agents.
Sims defeated Sukh Dhaliwal during the 2011 Canadian election.
