Nepalese woman who was sevent-months pregnant set on fire by husband for undelivered dowry

VANCOUVER DESI

A Nepalese man and his family allegedly set fire to his wife, who was seven-months pregnant, over demand for a motorbike and a water buffalo as dowry, AFP reported.

Farid Sheikh poured kerosene over Rihana Shekh Dhafali, 25, and set her alight over the undelivered dowry, reported the Daily Mail.

Dhafali has accused her husband of regular physical abuse alleging he assaulted her and even “burnt her private parts with cigarettes,” according to a statement issued by rights group Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC).

Sheikh and his family, who were living in India, took Dhafali to hospital after she agreed to tell the doctors she did it to herself, reported the Daily Mail.

The police are reportedly searching for Farid Sheikh and his family, who vanished after the woman’s father filed a criminal complaint with the police.

Dhafali was brought back to Nepal by her father where she miscarried and remains in hospital in a critical condition with serious burns.

‘When the incident happened about a month ago, they took her to India for treatment, saying it was an accident,’ a police official told AFP.

‘We recorded her statement yesterday, but her husband and in-laws have vanished. We are searching for them,’ he said.
