A 60-year-old devout Sikh in northern India appears to be the proud owner of the world’s largest turban – weighing in at 100 pounds and stretching 645 metres long when unwrapped, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

Avtar Singh Mauni, of Patiala, Punjab, has been adding to his extra large headgear for the past 16 years and it now takes him about six hours to put on, the British tabloid reported.

“I don’t consider it to be a burden. I’m most happy when I wear it,” he said. “On the rare times I don’t have my turban on I keep getting this feeling of being incomplete, that some part of me is missing.”

And while it can often be heavy carrying around the 100 pound turban – not to mention the rest of his attire, which often includes heavy bangles and a sword – Mauni said he will continue wearing his Sikh outfit “until the time I have no more strength in my limbs.”

According to the Daily Mail, most Sikhs’ turbans only measure between five and seven metres long and the current Guinness World Record holder for world’s largest turban is Major Singh at 400 metres. Mauni continued adding to his turban in order to break this record, which is yet to be officially verified, the Daily Mail reported.

The ever-expanding turban makes it difficult for Mauni to pass through doorwayrs and get into cars, so instead he rides a motorcycle on his pilgrimages across the Punjab.
