A six-year-old Indian boy is being worshipped by villagers for a small patch of hair on his back that has grown into a 12-inch long tail, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

Amar Singh, from a small village in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, was born with spina bifida – a birth defect which can result in lower back growths, or in his case, a tuft of hair.

When Amar was born, the patch of hair was about one inch in length, but has grown over the years – and although it could easily be shaved or cut off, his family refuses to do so, the Daily Mail reported.

His family and local villagers believe his condition connects him to the monkey-like Hindu god, Hanuman and thus worship Amar – the youngest of five siblings – as a divine being.

According to the Daily Mail, his family claims the young boy is healthy and does well in school.

“Amar is a very loving child,’” his father Ajmer Singh told the British publication. “Everybody sees him as a symbol of god.”

Spina bifida is a common birth defect which occurs when the spinal column doesn’t fully close – it affects about one in every 2,500 children. It often doesn’t have any symptoms, so many people are unaware they have it.
