Fauja Singh, holder of the remarkable honour of being the world’s oldest marathon runner, will take part in Surrey’s International World Music Marathon this month.

At the grand old age of 101, Singh is showing no signs of slowing down.

“Fauja Singh is an inspiration to millions as a symbol of longevity, athleticism and the power of having a positive attitude,” says race director Tim Hopkins.
“It’s an honour to have him participating in our event.”

Singh, a.k.a. the Turbaned Tornado, developed his love of running while working as a farmer in his Punjab homeland, where he was born on April 1st, 1911, but it was more than a half-century later when Singh moved to Great Britain that he began marathon-ing in earnest.

Since taking up the sport Singh has achieved a number of accolades, including holding the world record for the men’s over-90 category after completing the 2003 Toronto marathon in five hours and 40 minutes.

“Fauja Singh is an example of the fact that no matter your age or athletic ability, it’s never too late to start working on physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle,” says Surrey City Councillor Tom Gill.

“The Surrey Marathon has a category for every ability and age and that’s why it’s such a fantastic event.”

Singh will participate in the Mayor’s 5K Walk/Run on Sunday, Sept. 30 alongside Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and a number of Surrey city councillors.

Individuals of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register to participate in the 5K event by registering online at www.surreymarathon.com

Event start times on Sept. 30:
■ Full Marathon – 7:30 a.m.
■ Prospera Relay Race – Full Marathon – 7:30 a.m.
■ Prospera Relay Race – Half Marathon – 8:00 a.m.
■ Run Inn Half Marathon – 8:00 a.m.
■ Mayor’s 5K – 9:30 a.m.
