A French treasure hunter has found 50 pieces of jewellery, including bracelets and necklaces on Mont Blanc belonging to passengers of an Air India flight that crashed on the mountain 48 years ago, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The Air India flight Kangchenjunga – a Boeing 707, bound from Mumbai to London had crashed on January 24, 1966 killing 117 passengers, including Indian scientist Homi Bhabha.

Climber Daniel Roche stumbled upon the jewellery while exploring the mountains, a year after another mountaineer found a box full of diamonds, emeralds, rubies and  sapphires in the region.

“They were scattered around a big cone at the Plateau des Pyramides, as if they had been placed the previous day,” Roche told Le Parisien. “There were bracelets, necklaces, pendants, gold chains, earrings.” Just like the box of gems, Roche believed these jewels also came from the AI flight Kanchenjunga.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Roche has discovered a host of objects from the AI’s Kanchenjunga crash and another AI flight – Malabar Princess, which crashed on 3 November, 1950 with 48 people on board.

Roche has no intention of selling the jewels. He will add them to his growing collection, unlike the unidentified climber who discovered the gemstones last year and handed them to the police.
