Video: Restaurant uses drone to fly pizza to its customer

VANCOUVER DESI

A Mumbai-based restaurant has adopted a new route to deliver pizza to its customers — by air.

In the financial capital infamous for its traffic jams, Francesco Pizzeria flew a pizza to a customer using an unmanned robot, reported the Press Trust of India.

“All of us had read about Amazon’s plans of using drones. We successfully carried out a test-delivery by sending a pizza to a customer located 1.5 km away from our outlet on May 11,” Francesco’s Pizzeria chief executive Mikhel Rajani told PTI.

The restaurant made a video of the test-flight, which has gone viral on social media.

The success of the test confirms that it can be used routinely in a few years, Rajani told PTI.

The video shows the four-rotor robot take off with a freshly baked pizza from its outlet, fly over central Mumbai streets to deliver it to a young man in a high-rise building.

Rajani claims this is the first time the unmanned drone has been used for deliver pizza in India, PTI reported.

The flight was made possible with the help of an auto engineer friend, Rajani said. Using drones saves time and costs for the company, which otherwise uses two-wheeler borne agents to deliver the pizza, he said.

“What we have done now will be common place in the next four to five years,” Rajani told PTI, adding every customized drone costs around $2,000.

There are current regulatory restrictions as well as technical difficulties that prevent the drones’ use  right now, Rajani said.
