NEW DELHI — India’s celebration of its constitution went off without major incident Saturday, with one exception: separatists in disputed Kashmir conducted a general strike to protest Indian rule.
Republic Day marks the day the India’s constitution was enacted in 1950.
In New Delhi, a massive parade to the city’s Red Fort featured cultural floats alternating with displays of weaponry. For example, the procession included a model of the Agni-V (Fire) missile that can carry nuclear weapons as far as Beijing.
India hailed its test of the missile in April last year as a significant step forward in its aspirations to become a regional and world power.

Celebrations were held under heavy security with large areas sealed off in order to take in the impressive military hardware on display. Bhutan's king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was chief guest.
