India’s Supreme Court on Monday called for immediate action in blocking the country’s pornographic websites, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

The court has asked India’s Department of Telecommunication (DoT)  to outline how this can be done.

The request came after Indian advocate Kamlesh Vaswani filed a petition, which states that although watching the pornographic videos themselves aren’t an offence, the sites should be banned because it’s one of the major causes for crimes and violence against women, the British tabloid reported.

“The absence of Internet laws encourages people to watch porn videos and over 20 crore (200 million) videos or clippings are freely available in the market, which have been directly downloaded from the Internet or copied from video CDs,” the petition stated.

According to the Daily Mail, legal experts say the country’s Information Technology Act doesn’t make it illegal to watch adult porn, but does make it illegal to watch child porn, with the law applying to “whoever creates text or digital images, collects, seeks, browses, downloads” child porn.

But according to cyber law expert Pavan Duggal, “this law has never been invoked yet and till date there has not been any conviction.”

According to the Daily Mail, Vaswani’s petition also points out that children are accessing sexual content online which is “far more graphic, violent, brutal, deviant and destructive, and has put the whole of society in danger as well as posing threats to public order in India.”

The Supreme Court has given the DoT three weeks to respond to its request for an outline.
