One of the most glamorous components of Diwali is finally being incorporated in Vancouver’s 10th annual Diwali Fest: Fashion.

The more than week-long festival, formerly known as Vancouver Celebrates Diwali, starts Tuesday night with a fashion show. The IndiGlam Fashion Social will see designs from Dolce & Gabana, Canali, Hugo Boss, Armana Collezioni, top Indian/Bollywood designer Ridhi Mehra and local designers Rimpy Sahota, Bhana Design Company and Satya Paul Sarees walking the runway.

“It’s almost a crime that we haven’t done it before — the annual tradition of Diwali is the wearing of new clothes,” said festival producer, Sean Devine.

The Indian holiday celebrates the victory of lightness over darkness, good over evil and also marks “the start of a new year,” according to Diwali Fest director Junita Thakorlal.

“Everybody cleans their house — out with the old, in with the new, so we start off fresh,” she said. “Everybody goes out and they have something new, whether that’s new jewelry, or a new outfit.”

The celebration is often equated to Christmas and how families dress up for holiday parties — so it was only fitting to add the “glamorous” fashion show.

“Because this is our 10th year we wanted to do it in a big way and we realized that one of the elements of the South Asian arts, which is fashion, has not yet been incorporated,” said Thakorlal.

Surrey’s Rimpy Sahota jumped at the opportunity to be a featured designer.

“Fashion plays a big part, you’ll never really see somebody just wearing a sweatshirt and a hoodie when it comes to Diwali,” she said.

Sahota will be presenting her first-ever collection, which is inspired by her South Asian heritage. She describes the line as “luxury wear, free-flowing silhouettes” and she imports the lightweight materials, like chiffon, from India.

The IndiGlam Fashion Social kicks off at 8 p.m. at Davie Street’s Scotiabank Dance Centre. Tickets are $25. For more information visit
