Italy rescues hundreds of migrants at sea, taken to island detention, most to be sent back

ROME — Italian police and military boats have rescued more than 350 migrants from two boats and have brought them to tiny Lampedusa island.
Coast guard officials say one boat was a rickety wooden craft with 231 people from sub-Saharan Africa aboard. The other was a 10-meter (33-feet) long dinghy crammed with 126 Tunisians. The migrants, who were accompanied ashore Saturday on Lampedusa, south of Sicily, were being held in a detention centre.
On Sunday, the first of several ferries was due to transfer many of the migrants to Sicily. Those without jobs awaiting them or who are ineligible for asylum will be sent back to their homelands.
Tens of thousands of clandestine migrants, many aboard smugglers’ boats, head to Italian shores each year.
