‘It’s been beautiful,’ Indian superstar Abhishek Bachchan says of Vancouver

Slightly groggy and still fighting jet lag, the entire Bachchan family is happily taking in the “stunning” Vancouver view as they gear up for the Times of India Film Awards this weekend.

“It’s been beautiful,” Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan said right before his rehearsal at B.C. Place Tuesday evening. “We have a wonderful view from our (hotel) room — over the bay and it just looks stunning.”

Bachchan and his wife, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, will be performing at the grand awards ceremony at the stadium on April 6 — their big return to the stage since their daughter’s birth in November 2011.

“As any parent would tell you, life does change after you have a child,” he said. “We’re no different – everything centres around the baby.”

“She gets her fair share of attention, (but) we’re not going to hide her or anything – we take her with us and we like to give her as normal an upbringing as possible.”

But he’s certainly excited to return to the stage with his wife on Saturday.

“(Rai) is one of my favourite co-stars,” Bachchan said, his face lighting up. “I’m happy to see her back onstage again — it should be fun.”

But he’s most looking forward to the opportunity to interact with the adoring fans.

“They make us who we are,” he said. “The opportunity to reach out to the audience and the fans and just say thank you for the love and respect … the personal touch which we don’t get to do on the screen.”

FAMILY FOOTSTEPS

Even with his young daughter in-tow for the inaugural event, there’s no pressure on her to follow in her parents’ footsteps — much like Bachchan’s upbringing with parent actors, he said.

“The emphasis was always on education … (and) being a good human being,” said Bachchan.

And while his own legendary father, Amitabh Bachchan, serves as “a great example” for his own work, he’s aware he can’t model his career after the legendary Bollywood actor.

“I don’t think anybody can model their career after his,” he said. “That’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of situation.”

“I’d love to be able to emulate, but sadly that’s not going to happen because I think he’s too special an individual — he’s always been an idol for me and will continue to be.”

He admires so many of his father’s qualities, but his sense of duty and dedication the most, he said.

“Even today when he’s on set he treats each film like it’s his first film and he’s been doing this for 40 years,” said the junior Bachchan. “His enthusiasm for his work — it’s just infectious.”
