Jayalalithaa demands all power from central units in state

Chennai, Dec 25 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa Tuesday demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh allot 2,830 MW power produced by central generating stations in the state.

In a letter to the prime minister, the text of which was released to the media here Jayalalithaa justified her demand by citing the rejection of her request for additional power on the grounds of transmission constraints.

“Therefore, it stands to reason that at least, the entire power generated by central generating stations in Tamil Nadu by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, the Madras Atomic Power Station at Kalpakkam and the joint venture unit between NTPC and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO), commissioned recently at Vallur near Chennai, totalling 2,830 MW is allocated to Tamil Nadu where there are no transmission constraints.”

She said the allocation shall be an interim arrangement to meet the huge power deficit and to alleviate the severe hardship faced by the people of Tamil Nadu, till all the new power projects under construction in Tamil Nadu are fully commissioned.

Jayalalithaa also urged Manmohan Singh to allocate the entire 2,000 MW power to be generated from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project coming up in Tirunelveli district to the state.

She cited the allocation of entire 1,000 MW generated by the National Thermal Power Corporation’s (NTPC) unit at Simhadri in Andhra Pradesh to that state and urged the prime minister to apply the same yardstick to allocate power to be generated by KNPP.

Jayalalithaa had earlier written to Manmohan Singh requesting an allocation of 1,000 MW from the central pool to the state. The centre allocted only 100 MW.
